Mocha Latte Pre-Workout Shake Recipe

I’ve got a surprisingly good-for-you recipe that’s perfect any time that little extra “kick” of energy sounds like just the ticket (including before a workout).

How does a mocha iced latte sound?  (Answer:  delicious.)

Here’s why it’s surprisingly good for you – and why it’s a great pre-workout drink:

  • Whey protein stimulates the perfect insulin response to drive muscle growth & recovery (aka using insulin's powerful qualities wisely)
  • Cocoa powder has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.  The "undutched" type preserves up to 60% more of these properties.
  • Caffeine from the coffee gives energy to boost performance and endurance.  It also has appetite-suppressing properties.
  • The medium-chain fatty acids from the coconut/MCT oil bypass the liver and can be used right away in the blood stream for energy.

For those not familiar with protein powder, there are literally hundreds on the market now including whey and egg white protein to plant-based powders made from hemp, pea, rice, or soy.

Non-animal based powders are not as bio-available in humans and may need to be consumed in higher doses to achieve the same results that an animal-based one will give.

When choosing a plant-based powder, be aware that this can mean:

  • ingesting more calories for the same nutritional impact,
  • finishing the canister faster,
  • having to spend more money to purchase the product more often, and
  • more packaging that usually ends up in the landfill.

Doesn't sound like a great deal to me ... because they are nutritionally superior, I unapologetically prioritize animal proteins in my eating plan.

For a pre-workout (especially strength training) context, whey is always my first choice because it harnesses the awesome power of insulin and directs the complete protein in the drink right towards repairing and growing the muscles that are being challenged in the workout.

TIP: If you drink coffee in the morning, make a little extra and keep it in the fridge to use later in this recipe.

Mocha Iced Protein Latte

(serves 1)

½ cup brewed coffee (hot or cold)

¼ cup water

¼ cup milk (or just use more water)

1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (enough to equal 30g protein)

1 Tbsp unsweetened (undutched) cocoa powder

1 Tbsp coconut oil or MCT oil (optional)

Non-sugar sweetener to taste

Place the all ingredients in a high-speed blender, cover, and blend well.  Add some ice cubes, if a cold drink is desired, and blend until smooth.  For a thinner consistency, add a little extra water or coffee.

Delicious!

I hope you love this recipe as much as I do.

Make it an amazing day,
